Are the AFL clubs getting rid of the old coaches?
Q. On the face of it, it appears that Essendon and Carlton offloaded their coaches(Sheedy and Pagan) because they are senior citizens. I guess that due to the age discrimination Act, clubs have to find another reason for installing young blood coaches. Has anyone else thought of this reason to axe a coach ?
Asked by jemima - Mon Oct 8 21:20:16 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Welll they do it with players. So why not? I think the two of them are fine coaches but Pagan's record is not good in the past few years. Like Roos he seems to have invented one style of play that has now been worked out by other teams. He appears to be washed up for new ideas. Sheedy hasn't had that much to work with but you can't doubt his record (as I think you can for Pagan). Sheeds can have a job as another assistant for Bomber if he wants :-) (Dang there I go again :-))

Should there be more or less AFL clubs?
Q. Obviously the AFL are looking to get more money out of introducing new clubs into the league like Western Sydney (which has failure written all over it) and Gold Coast (which will be alright). But don't you think there would be better quality and more 'elite' football if we reduced the amount of clubs in the AFL?

A. I don't think if Tassie, West Sydney or Gold Coast want a team they shouldn't not be able to have one just because there are too many clubs based in Melbourne. No, i probably don't want any more teams. Although that is not because the above teams are being introduced, its because i believe there are too many in Vic, but we can't help that as none of them deserve to merge/fold. If that makes sense... it's been a long weekend..

What is the normal AFL practices for clubs in getting new players?
Q. what is the AFL rules, ways or processes in getting new players for clubs? Is it normal for a club to offer a player to train, and during the trainning period (before any employment contracts were signed), the player injured himself by taking certain medicines or drugs, then the club terminate any further training? In such case, is there any contracts between the club and player? If the player cannot play any games for 12 months, does the club owe any obligations to the player or vice versa? Any similar cases happened before?

A. In the AFL, they have a system called the draft. You get picks depending on where you finish on the ladder at the end of the season, so 16th gets pick 1, 15th gets pick 2 etc. They have a rule called the "Priority Pick". If a team wins accumulates 20.5 points in a season (5 wins=20 points) they get another pick. if the team that finishes bottom wins 3 games for the year, they get picks 1,17 and every subsequent pick is based on whether another team gets a priority pick. A team may get 1,17,33,50 etc. Draft picks can be traded for a player already on a list. There is two draft systems, the nab afl rookie draft where players from U/18's and reserve teams chosen by the AFL are picked by the clubs. Any listed player who is out of contract or a… [cont.]

How many clubs have never won an AFL flag - not referring to the insignificant VFL flag.?
Q. I know, I can google it, but I get more satisfaction from reading it here as to who have never won an AFL flag. VFL flags were easy to win as the richest & most financial clubs at the time just bought ready made players from other states...a bit like basketball in Oz at the moment.

A. **I have seen lots of Geelong players out and about. Most of them seem nice and will say hello or are happy to give you an autograph if you request one. The only player to really annoy me with his arrogance was James Kelly. The few times I have seen him in person he has seemed so up himself - certainly not the same character you see on TV that's for sure! Other than that I think most players seem pretty level headed and 'normal' as you put it.**

Why is Collingwood treated differently to other AFL clubs - WCE for example?
Q. The WCE were put under notice & close scrutiny by the AFL mainly due to the behaviour of Ben Cousins. A retired Supreme Court judge conducted a lengthy review whereby nearly every Eagles squad member was interviewed by him. The Eagles were threatened with all sorts of penalties from fines to loss of draft picks; premiership points etc. They are still subject of these threats & sanctions & the AFL is refusing to lift them - or give advice as to when they may be removed. It is the major contributing factor for the reason the Eagles have gone so bad this year. Whereas the Magpies can do as they like with misbehaviour by their players. There is not much difference in Cousins' behaviour to that being displayed by numerous Collingwood players.… [cont.]

A. What more can I say. You've pretty much nailed it. We await to see what the AFL do to respond. But I expect that we'll be waiting a long time. I expect we'll see a statement like "we understand that this matter will be dealt with within the club". Double standards. Absolutely.

A. These types of Qs are always interesting because it's not all about who's the closest to winning one right now or even in the next few years, because you can be close to winning one and have good years but unless you are the #1 best team in a year, you can have plenty of near-misses and impressive seasons without winning one. St Kilda appear the best of the five that you have mentioned, but if Geelong get in the way as they already have once, their window could close with just a bunch of second-place finishes. Freo, as good as they have looked at times, I'm not sold that I can see them ever being the team that hoists the cup up on Grand Final day. For the reason that being good doesn't necessarily mean even one flag, questions like this… [cont.]

A. Bulldogs Saints Richmond Freo Melbourne Won't be for plenty of years though. You can't just say Richmond because they have a good list and are on the rise. I don't think this list will take them to a Premiership. If they can rebuild well after that then anything can happen. You've got to remember Bulldogs and Saints haven't won one in 60 years, very hard to predict. Freo really should have a Premiership by now. Maybe if they didn't give away pick 1 (Hodge) and pick 30 something (Mitchell) for Croad (who later went back to the Hawks) and McPharlin

A. I agree with contracts. They don't mean anything. People can still be traded and retire even with the contract.

Who do the AFL think they are telling SANFL clubs who they can recruit?
Q. Late last week they told the SANFL to stop recruiting former AFL players.

A. This is absolute bull, when there are many players that play and they want to keep playing there , especially if they like the league. I mean Damien Peverill is running around for Collingwood in the VFL. I suppose the AFL thinks it's right if the Vics do it, but the other states don't, and i'm a vic myself. All leagues should be open to players once they choose to go to a state league for more playing time or are not up to the rigours of AFL footy, and want to continue in a state league.
