Aerobic exercise is physical exercise that intends to improve the oxygen system Aerobic means "with oxygen", and refers to the use of oxygen in the body's metabolic or energy-generating process. Many types of exercise are aerobic, and by definition are performed at moderate levels of intensity for extended periods of time. HistoryBoth the term and the specific exercise method were developed by Kenneth H. Cooper, M.D., an exercise physiologist, and Col. Pauline Potts, a physical therapist, both in the United States Air Force. Dr. Cooper, an avowed exercise enthusiast, was personally and professionally puzzled about why some people with excellent muscular strength were still prone to poor performance at tasks such as long-distance running, swimming, and bicycling. He began measuring systematic human performance using a bicycle ergometer, and began measuring sustained performance in terms of a person's ability to use oxygen. His groundbreaking book, Aerobics, was published in 1968, and included scientific exercise programs using running, walking, swimming and bicycling. The book came at a fortuitous historical moment, when increasing weakness and inactivity in the general population was causing a perceived need for increased exercise. It became a bestseller. Cooper's data provided the scientific baseline for almost all modern aerobics programs, most of which are based on oxygen-consumption equivalency. From Wikipedia under the

Asked by Brown Eyed Girl - Fri Mar 26 10:25:02 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. The benefits of aerobic exercise to protect the heart are very well known. But exercise is not only beneficial for the heart and muscles. Other benefits of exercise includes: 1. Better cardiac function: The heart gets more blood per beat. That means that the heart rate is reduced in times of relaxation and during the exercise. 2. Weight loss: During exercise the body burns fat and as a result the total body fat is reduced. 3. Improving mental health: Regular exercise releases the endorphins, the natural painkillers of the body, which among other things reduces stress, anxiety and depression. 4. Helps the immune system: Numerous studies have shown that people who exercise regularly are less prone to mild viral infections such as colds or… [cont.] Answered by Rose . - Fri Mar 26 11:19:28 2010 If I did aerobic exercise 8 times in the past week and a half and now I have pain in my back should I stop? Answered by hydroco - Wed Oct 18 19:48:00 2006 Why is it bad to take a break during aerobic exercise?
Q. I was on the elliptical trainer, moderate intensity, for about an hour, but 30 minutes into it I had to go to the bathroom really bad. I literally jumped off of the machine and ran to the bathroom. About 3 minutes later I went back on the machine and finished the remaining 30 minutes of my exercise. My friend told me I shouldn't have done that. He said either I shouldn't have taken the break to use the bathroom, or I shouldn't have gone back on after. Why is that? I didn't get sick or anything so what's the big deal? Asked by sylar6543 - Thu Feb 18 22:37:57 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. There is actually some scientific basis supporting why you shouldn't stop or take a break during aerobic exercise. During exercise most of your blood is being sent to your muscles and then back to the heart by the contracting force of the muscle pushing blood through the veins. So, if you suddenly stop aerobic exercise, there is a lot of blood in your muscles that needs to return the heart. Without the muscles moving to facilitate venous blood return to the heart, your circulation of blood to the brain and heart itself is compromised and could potentially lead to dizziness or fainting. This is called blood "pooling" and this is why you should gradually cool down from aerobic exercise and not stop or take sudden breaks.
